After the first initial six months of Doctor visits and trying to figure out why we can't get pregnant, I needed to have my yearly exam. We had just moved in to a new area, so when I called to make an appointment the military clinic (after going over my records) decided I needed to continue to see a specialist so they referred me out to a fertility clinic downtown. I guess I overwhelmed them with my long list of issues :)
As I'm waiting in the exam room a young man walks in and takes down some info. After he writes down his notes he lets me know he is a med student and had to make sure he got all of my info correctly before the Dr. would come in to do the exam. He didn't look any older than 18 to me, but who was I to decline Doogie Howser? The Doc was an older woman who spent a lot of time doing studies on infertility. In the room there was the usual nurse, the med student, and the doctor.
As she starts the exam, she notices in my chart that I have a history of fibroadinomas in my breasts... this would be alarming to anyone who found a lump in their breast, but I have had regular mammograms and have had them since I was seventeen. As she is checking them she is describing to the med student what they feel like, how they move in comparison to a tumor, etc. I could tell she didn't want to offer to him to feel it, but really felt like this would be a good experience for him so I offered. He was thrilled. So he slips on his too small gloves on his thick hands and proceeds to feel the small lumps in my breasts. He looked like a kid in a candy shop- like it was the coolest thing he had every experienced. As I'm watching the Doc, she is doing all she can not to giggle at his enthusiasm. Now I have to add, this was not a perverted thrill by any means! I wouldn't be posting this if it had been. This was a "wow, that was really cool!" enthusiasm.
As the appointment continues, the lady doctor is now feeling both of my ovaries. Since my surgery about two years prior, one of my ovaries had a bunch of scar tissue built up around it, so it isn't as mobile. As she is comparing the one to the other and asking me if there's any discomfort I look over to the student, who is taking a very detailed and rapid note of everything she is saying. There really wasn't too much discomfort, but I could certainly tell a difference. She was hesitant, but I knew it was coming, so again I allowed her student to have the opportunity to know what my "issues" feel like. He Could Not Get His Gloves On Fast Enough!! Doc is describing to him how to insert his fat fingers inside me, and he started out a little too hasty- but not before I could encourage LUBE!! Which he allowed the nurse to help him with (as she was now giggling).
As he is awkwardly, but trying oh so carefully, to examine the difference between the ovaries his face lit up like a kid on Christmas morning! Now I couldn't help but giggle. As he's feeling both over again, he starts to just blubber out "Thank you! This is so amazing! Thank you!". It wasn't until after my seasoned and professional doctor said to this poor med student "remove your hands from her vagina and then you can thank her", that we all busted out in laughter at this poor young kid. His face was beat red. He removed his gloves, backed against the wall, and said "thank you very much for this educational moment".
It still makes me laugh thinking about this one visit. It is certainly one I will never forget! Just when I started to think I was a freak and that my body was one big learning experience for a young med student, I realized his inability to let professionalism overtake his excitement stole the show! I'm glad I could give him such an amazing experience! Haha.
